Emus are now free to roam far and wide at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary!
Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is trialing a new program to allow our beautiful emus to roam through the majority of our 27 hectare, coastal rainforest property and interact with our guests wherever they like. This move is the first of many to allow our guests to have a wonderful interactive experience with our native wildlife across this unique site.
This soft-feathered, brown, flightless bird reaches up to two metres in height and can sprint at speeds of up to 50 km/h. Their long legs allow them to take strides of up to 275 centimetres and they are opportunistically nomadic. They feed on a variety of plants and insects, but have been known to go for weeks without food. Here at Currumbin we feed our emus special pellets and a variety of greens and fruit. They love their treats of grapes and watermelon!
